Funky Buddha Void Shaker

Happy Sunday Funday AND 4th of July!!

While it’s been raining all weekend and Hurricane Elsa is set to hit on Tuesday, we’re having an awesome time. We’ve been grillin’ and chillin’ in the pool regardless of the rain, I’ve got a pork butt sitting in the smoker and a highly touted beer in my glass!

If you know me, you know I’m so cheap that I squeak when I walk. However, this 4-Pack of Void Shaker, a Barrel Aged Stout from Funky Buddha is usually $15.99, but was on sale for $12 and change. I figured, what the heck, you can’t find it cheaper than that!

Crappy Pictures, Great Beer!

Appearance: This pours a motor oil black with a 1″ mocha-colored head. This is pretty surprising because it’s a rockin’ 11% ABV which usually kills any head retention.

Aroma: This smells deceivingly light, with chocolate, peanut butter and, of course, well-aged bourbon. There’s even hints of cigar which must be from the charred oak barrels.

Taste: Man oh MAN is this good! I’m not sure the best way to describe this beer, but take a fantastic dark chocolate mixed with a high-end bourbon on the rocks.

The mocha helps hide any unwanted booziness and the end of the sip rides out a great bourbon finish. The risk you run with Bourbon Barrel Aged (BBA) beer is that it can be overwhelmingly boozy but this is amazingly balanced.

Mouthfeel: This feels like a thicker whiskey on the rocks. There is a bit of carbonation at the end that helps lift it up to where it’s not super heavy.

Value: Looking at $3 a beer for a 4-pack of this is a steal. I’m glad I got off my wallet and scooped this up!

Overall: Maybe I’m being generous because it’s the 4th, but Void Shaker is probably the best BBA Stout I’ve ever had! It has fantastic flavor, you get the classic Stout taste and a wonderfully blended bourbon taste with it.

It isn’t overwhelming in any way, but isn’t so light that you accidentally start crushing them. I would give this a 10/10. I’ve got half a mind to age one for a year and see how it pans out. In fact, I may just do that.

Until next time, tight lines and cheers!
