Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA

Happy Sunday Funday ya’ll! I spent quite a bit of time this weekend fishing, whether for bream (bluegill) on Saturday or flats fishing Sunday. We managed to get a few keeper bream for the frying pan, and a short snook along with a few jacks today.

I figured DFH’s “Slightly Mighty,” which bills itself as a full flavor, yet low calorie beer (and which happened to be on sale) would be the perfect pair. While these fish were on the small size, they all pack a punch above their weight class at the end of the line.

I’ve had a few “low calorie” beers before and have had mixed results, so let’s see where this lands!

Appearance: This pours a very pale straw color with a heavy amount of carbonation. It’s lighter almost than your typical Bud Light. I wonder if they watered down an IPA to make this.

Aroma: Unlike the aforementioned Bud Light, this is heavy on the earthy and piney hops! I’m a bit more optimistic now on how this will taste.

Taste: Unfortunately, the bark is louder than the bite in this beer. It had a great aroma, but the flavor is extremely underwhelming.

The flavor profile starts with a weak, bland malt and has a watery hop note that leads to an off aftertaste. While you could drink these no problem, it’s pretty close to drinking water.

Mouthfeel: The moutfeel is almost a dead ringer for a a Budweiser or original Busch. It is light but not super light like most “light beers.” It is very bland.

Value: While I got it BOGO (so $9.99 for a 12 pack essentially), you may as well drink Busch Light as it is 0.1% more ABV and the same amount of calories.

Overall: As far as a “Low Calorie IPA” goes, I would give this a 3/10. While it is low calorie, there are next to no hops present in the flavor profile, or really much flavor at all.

If you’re wanting a low calorie beer, you’re better off getting a traditional light beer as it has just about the same flavor, a higher ABV, and at least half the regular price of it. Well, they can’t all be winners but even (mostly) bad beer is still decent beer.

Until next time, tight lines and cheers!
